Position Overview
Are you ready to make a difference and protect your community? Our firefighters are dedicated to safeguarding lives and property using advanced equipment, modern techniques, and exceptional teamwork. Under the supervision of a Lieutenant, you’ll respond to emergency and non-emergency calls, providing vital fire suppression, rescue, and medical services.
Qualifications
To be considered for this rewarding career, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old at the time of employment.
- Hold a High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record for the past three years. (Must obtain a license applicable to Fire Department apparatus.)
- Have no convictions for theft, driving while intoxicated, or controlled substance charges within the last five years.
- Speak, read, and write in English.
- Successfully pass:
- Firefighter entrance exam
- Physical agility entrance exam
- Extensive background check
- Pre-employment medical exam
- Pre-employment drug screening
- Obtain New Mexico Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B) certification within the first year of employment.
- Perform strenuous physical activities in extreme conditions, including intense heat, cold, smoke, or at great heights.
- Respond effectively to emergencies and high-stress situations.
- Build effective working relationships with team members, other agencies, and the community.
Key Responsibilities
As a firefighter, you will:
- Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls, providing fire suppression, medical aid, and rescue services.
- Obtain Firefighter I & II IFSAC certification or equivalent within the first year.
- Obtain a New Mexico EMT-B license within the first year.
- Obtain EVO certification and safely operate department vehicles.
- Follow orders from supervisors and adhere to department policies and standard operating guidelines.
- Maintain personal safety using appropriate protective equipment.
- Develop a basic understanding of the Incident Management System and take command of incidents when necessary.
- Complete and pass all exams, practical drills, and assessments required for the position.
- Learn and develop basic pump operations and acquire detailed knowledge of city streets, highways, and county response areas.
- Communicate effectively, completing records and reports accurately.
- Work both independently and as part of a team during incidents of varying duration.
- Develop and maintain technical skills related to safety, fitness, firefighting, and special operations.
- Deliver excellent customer service and build positive relationships with the public.
- Participate in ongoing training, drills, and education programs to maintain certifications and skills.
- Maintain equipment and city property, ensuring everything is in peak working condition.
- Act professionally at all times, representing the Fire Department and the City positively.
- Perform other department activities as assigned.
